Overview

About this tour

Five distinct ecosystems in nine days, working down from the forest on Mount Kenya through the Rift Valley lakes to the Mara. The first night is spent at a tree lodge above a floodlit waterhole and salt lick, which reverses the usual arrangement: you sit still and the animals come to you.

Ol Pejeta and Sweetwaters follow, one of the few places in Kenya where night game drives are permitted. Then Lake Nakuru for black and white rhino, and Lake Naivasha for Hell’s Gate and an optional boat trip among the hippo and the four hundred-odd bird species on the lake. The safari closes with three nights in the Maasai Mara and two complete days in the reserve, which in ecological terms is simply the northern end of the Serengeti. This is a private departure, and park entrance fees, accommodation, all meals on safari, drinking water and transfers are included.

Detailed itinerary

Your Topma Tours and Safaris guide meets you at the airport or your hotel for breakfast and a full briefing before you head north. You reach Mount Kenya in the early afternoon and the rest of the day is yours on the lodge’s viewing decks, looking out over ancient rainforest with the mountain behind it. Game viewing continues after dark under floodlights at the waterhole and salt lick. A guided nature walk can be added at extra cost. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

After breakfast you continue to the Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary, set inside the Ol Pejeta ranch and rhino sanctuary. Lunch at camp, then an afternoon game drive. Ol Pejeta carries a large population of game including elephant and giraffe, and it is one of the few places in Kenya licensed for night game drives, which can be arranged from camp. Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Tented Camp.

You leave after breakfast for Lake Nakuru, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon game drive works the lakeshore and the acacia woodland behind it; the park holds both white and black rhino, and the birding is consistently heavy. Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge.

The road runs southwest along the floor of the Great Rift Valley to Lake Naivasha, arriving for lunch. The afternoon takes in Hell’s Gate, with an optional boat trip on the lake. Naivasha is freshwater rather than soda, which is why the bird list runs past four hundred species and why the hippo are here in numbers, with Mount Longonot standing over the whole thing. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

After breakfast you head southwest to the Maasai Mara, arriving in time for lunch. An afternoon game drive follows, out among the plains game, elephant, buffalo, cheetah and the black-maned lions the reserve is known for. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

A full day out with a picnic lunch, working the central plains and the rolling grassland where the resident lion prides hold territory. Lunch is taken at the hippo pool, watching the pods lie up in the shallows. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Having a second full day is what separates this itinerary from the shorter ones. You can push further out today, towards the Mara River and the western reaches of the reserve, and you have the option of going back to whatever yesterday turned up rather than driving past it. Picnic lunch in the field. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

A visit to a Maasai homestead after breakfast, then the drive back to Nairobi with lunch on the way, arriving in the evening. Dinner at the Carnivore can be arranged at extra cost. Overnight at your Nairobi hotel.

Collection from your hotel and transfer to the airport for your flight home.
