Overview

About this tour

Standing at 5,895 meters above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. The 6 Day Mt Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trek affectionately known as the “Coca-Cola Route” is the only route on Kilimanjaro that provides comfortable dormitory-style sleeping huts complete with mattresses and dining halls at every camp stage.

By utilizing a 6-day itinerary with an essential acclimatization day at Horombo Huts (3,720m), trekkers give their bodies time to adjust to the high altitude, dramatically increasing the chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. From walking through lush rainforests filled with Colobus monkeys to standing atop Africa’s highest point, this guided expedition delivers an extraordinary high-altitude adventure with comprehensive guide, porter, and chef support.

Day by day

Detailed itinerary

Your expedition begins with a pickup from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Meet your mountain guide, porters, and cook for a detailed briefing before departing for the Marangu Gate for park registration. Begin your 7 km hike through a lush montane rainforest filled with towering eucalyptus trees, vibrant birdlife, and playful Colobus monkeys. Upon reaching Mandara Huts, enjoy a short side walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views across Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Accommodation: Mandara Huts

After breakfast, hike through the upper rainforest canopy into the open heath and moorland zone toward the Horombo escarpment. As you ascend, you will begin feeling the higher altitude while taking in dramatic views of the Kibo summit and the jagged peaks of Mawenzi.

Accommodation: Horombo Huts

To maximize your summit success rate, spend a vital acclimatization day at Horombo Huts. Take a guided circuit walk toward the Mawenzi Ridge and back down to Horombo Huts. This additional day allows your body to adjust gradually to the altitude while rewarding you with sweeping views from all directions.

Accommodation: Horombo Huts

Enjoy breakfast with your mountain team before embarking on the 10 km trek across the alpine desert saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape changes from moorland heather to a dramatic, barren moonscape. Arrive at Kibo Huts in the early afternoon, rest, and enjoy an early dinner as you prepare for your midnight summit push.

Accommodation: Kibo Huts

Wake up between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM to begin your summit push across steep, snow-covered trails. Ascend via Gilman’s Point (5,861m) on the crater rim before continuing along the glacier edge to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa! Take photos at the summit sign before descending back to Kibo Huts for a hot lunch and brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Huts for your final night on the mountain.

Accommodation: Horombo Huts

After breakfast, complete your journey with an 18 km descent through the moorland and rainforest canopy back to Marangu Gate. Receive your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate of Achievement, bid farewell to your mountain crew, and transfer back to Moshi, Arusha, or the airport for your onward travel.
