Overview

About this tour

Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” the 5 Day Mt Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trek is famous for being the only path up Mount Kilimanjaro that provides comfortable, wooden dormitory-style sleeping huts complete with mattresses and dining halls at every camp stage—eliminating the need to camp in tents.

This 5-day itinerary offers a direct ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), taking trekkers through dense rainforests filled with Colobus monkeys, open alpine moorlands, and the high-altitude desert saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. With full-board meals, dedicated porter support, and certified mountain guides, this package delivers an authentic, high-altitude African trek.

Day by day

Detailed itinerary

Your adventure begins after breakfast with a briefing from your mountain guide and a transfer from Arusha to Marangu Gate at Mount Kilimanjaro National Park for registration. Begin your trek through a lush montane rainforest filled with towering eucalyptus trees, birdlife, and Colobus monkeys. Arrive at Mandara Hut (2,740m) in the afternoon. You can take a short detour to Maundi Crater for panoramic views across Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Accommodation: Mandara Hut

After breakfast, leave the rainforest canopy behind and trek 11 km across open alpine moorlands towards Horombo Hut. Enjoy views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks while passing unique flora such as giant lobelias and groundsels. As the altitude increases, you will settle in at Horombo Hut for dinner and rest.

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Trek past the last water source and traverse the alpine saddle connecting Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The landscape transitions into an alpine desert moonscape as you approach Kibo Hut. Arrive in the early afternoon, enjoy a hot dinner, and rest before your midnight summit attempt.

Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Wake up around 2:00 AM to begin your steep summit push over scree and snow. Reach Gilman’s Point (5,861m) on the crater rim after 4 to 7 hours, then continue along the glacier rim for 1 to 2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa! Take photos at the summit before descending to Kibo Hut for lunch and a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight stay.

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

After breakfast, complete your 20 km descent through moorlands and rainforest back to Marangu Gate (1,830m). Receive your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate of Achievement, say goodbye to your mountain crew, and transfer back to your hotel in Arusha, Moshi, or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
