The city
Where history meets the ocean
Mombasa is an island city linked to the mainland by bridges and ferries, and it has traded across the Indian Ocean for centuries. Its Old Town is a maze of narrow streets, carved wooden doors and mosques, watched over by Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the 1590s and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
North of the island, Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu beaches offer resorts and calm lagoons, while the Mombasa Marine National Park protects coral reefs just offshore. The city is also known for its food, from biryani and pilau to street-side mahamri and fresh seafood.
Mombasa is the gateway to the whole coast. Head south to Diani Beach, north to Kilifi and Watamu, or inland to Tsavo East.
