7 Days spectacular roof of Africa Machame route climbing
Your Mount Kilimanjaro trek begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate (1,830m), which takes about 50 minutes. After registration, you’ll embark on a 5 to 7-hour hike covering 18 kilometers through the lush Montane Forest. The trail winds up a ridge, and although beautiful, it can be muddy and slippery so gaiters and trekking poles are useful. You’ll gain elevation up to 3,100 meters as you reach Machame Camp, where you’ll spend the night surrounded by forested beauty and crisp mountain air.
Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp
After a hearty breakfast, continue your Mount Kilimanjaro ascent, leaving the rainforest and entering the Moorland zone. Today’s trail climbs from 3,100 meters to 3,840 meters, covering 9 kilometers over 4 to 6 hours. You’ll cross a small valley and trek along a steep rocky ridge blanketed with heather. As the ridge fades, the route veers west into a river gorge, finally arriving at Shira Camp for a well-deserved rest under open skies.
Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
This critical acclimatization day begins at 3,840 meters on the Shira Plateau. You’ll ascend to 4,630 meters at the Lava Tower also called the “Shark’s Tooth” before descending back to 3,860 meters at Barranco Camp. The 15-kilometer trek takes 5 to 7 hours through a stark, dramatic Semi-Desert landscape. Although you end the day at roughly the same elevation as you started, this high-altitude exposure helps your body prepare for Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit.
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Continue your Mount Kilimanjaro journey with a shorter, yet steep climb over the famous Barranco Wall. Today’s route takes you from 3,860 meters to approximately 4,200 meters in elevation. You’ll hike 5 kilometers over 4 to 5 hours through stunning Alpine Desert terrain, eventually reaching Karanga Camp. This segment provides important acclimatization time and striking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Your trek continues toward Barafu Camp at 4,600 meters, ascending from 4,200 meters. The 13-kilometer trail takes roughly 6 to 8 hours and remains within the Alpine Desert zone. Along the way, you’ll pass the junction connecting with the Mweka descent route and enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s twin summits Mawenzi and Kibo. At Barafu, you’ll rest early in preparation for your summit push.
Day 6: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. Start your summit bid around midnight, ascending from 4,600 meters to the Uhuru Peak summit at 5,895 meters. The 7-kilometer climb to the top takes 6 to 8 hours through Stone Scree and Ice-Capped Summit terrain. Watch an unforgettable sunrise at Stella Point (5,685m) before reaching the Roof of Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend 23 kilometers to Mweka Camp (3,100m), which takes another 7 to 8 hours. Expect a shift from ice to forest as you descend.
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Arusha
The final leg of your Mount Kilimanjaro hike descends from 3,100 meters to 1,830 meters, covering 15 kilometers in about 3 to 4 hours through the Forest zone. The trail can be wet and slippery, so trekking poles remain helpful. At Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate before being transfered with Topma tours and Safaris guide back to your hotel in Arusha ending your incredible 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro experience.
