5 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Climb – Marangu Route
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins in Arusha with a detailed briefing and gear check by your mountain guide. After breakfast, you’ll drive to Kilimanjaro National Park and arrive at the Marangu Gate (1,870m) for registration. The trek kicks off through a lush rainforest where you’ll spot colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of birds hidden among the towering Eucalyptus and fig trees. You’ll ascend steadily on a well-maintained trail, covering about 8 kilometers in 4–5 hours. Upon reaching Mandara Hut (2,700m), take a short rest before walking to Maundi Crater for panoramic views stretching into Kenya and northern Tanzania.
Accommodation: Mandara Hut – shared wooden huts with beds and basic amenities.
Today, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail offers expansive views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This section of the Marangu Route is about 11 kilometers long and typically takes 5–6 hours. As you ascend through this drier landscape, you’ll encounter giant lobelias and groundsels fascinating plant species adapted to the mountain environment. You’ll arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m) in the afternoon, where you’ll enjoy warm drinks and a hearty meal while adjusting to the higher elevation.
Accommodation: Horombo Hut – wooden huts with bunk beds, solar lighting, and shared dining areas.
Your journey continues with a steady climb from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut. This segment of the Marangu Route passes through alpine desert and covers approximately 10 kilometers. You’ll leave behind the last water point near the “Last Water” stream and trek across the barren saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain here resembles a lunar landscape dry, windy, and dramatic. After about 5 to 6 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Kibo Hut at 4,700 meters, where you’ll rest, enjoy an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the overnight ascent to the summit.
Accommodation: Kibo Hut – basic stone-built shelter with bunk beds and a communal dining area.
Your summit attempt begins just after midnight. With headlamps guiding your way, you’ll ascend the steep scree path to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From there, it’s another 1–2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The sunrise from the summit is a breathtaking reward for your efforts. You’ll have time for photos and celebration before starting the descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest and lunch. Afterward, continue down to Horombo Hut where you’ll spend the night. This day on the Marangu Route is physically demanding, covering nearly 22 kilometers in total, but it’s also the most rewarding.
After breakfast, begin the final descent down the Marangu Route. The 20-kilometer trail retraces your steps through the moorland and lush rainforest, passing Mandara Hut before reaching the Marangu Gate. The walk takes approximately 6–7 hours, offering one last chance to enjoy Kilimanjaro’s diverse ecosystems. Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll receive a summit certificate green for Gilman’s Point and gold for Uhuru Peak. A vehicle from Topma Tours will be waiting to transfer you back to Arusha. Once at your hotel, take time to relax, reflect, and celebrate your incredible achievement on the Marangu Route.
